This morning, Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST) held an inauguration ceremony for the Institute for Artificial Intelligence Research and Application (AI4LIFE). The institute was established to advance the national strategy for AI research, development, and application through 2030, as outlined in Prime Minister’s Decision No. 127/QĐ-TTg dated January 26, 2021.
In his speech at the ceremony, Assoc. Prof. Huynh Quyet Thang, President of HUST, highlighted the significant advancements in AI in recent years and its widespread application across various professions and daily life, particularly noting the popularity of ChatGPT among the general public. Recognizing the importance of interdisciplinary AI research, HUST signed a resolution in June 2024 to establish AI4Life as a hub for connecting academic research with practical applications of AI.
AI4LIFE consists of six laboratories: Machine Learning, Smart Semiconductor Technology, Intelligent Life Sciences, Smart Environment, Intelligent Systems, and Smart Education. As one of Vietnam’s leading centers for AI innovation, AI4LIFE aims to position HUST among the top three national AI innovation hubs in Vietnam and across ASEAN.
During the ceremony, AI4LIFE signed memoranda of understanding (MoUs) and cooperation agreements with six partner organizations during the ceremony. These include Toray Industries (Hong Kong) Vietnam Co., Ltd., Headwaters Co., Ltd. (Japan), Oraichain Labs JSC, Data Impact JSC, the National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting (Vietnam Meteorological and Hydrological Administration), and Vietnam Certification Center (Commission for Standards, Metrology and Quality).
Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Bui The Duy expressed high expectations for HUST and the institute, stating, “I believe AI4LIFE is an upgrade that aligns AI with information technology, businesses, and other knowledge and skills.”
On behalf of the Ministry of Education and Training, Deputy Minister Nguyen Van Phuc commended HUST for their leadership in multidisciplinary training and research in engineering and technology, emphasizing the establishment of AI4LIFE as a significant step toward advancing cutting-edge technology in line with government policies.
Three key tasks for AI4LIFE:
Enhance Collaboration: Work closely with the School of Information and Communication Technology, the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and other university units to strengthen the research ecosystem, technology transfer, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
Build Partnerships: Establish relationships with research organizations, businesses, ministries, and localities to promote AI research and address urgent challenges.
Foster Multidisciplinary Research: Create multidisciplinary research groups of regional significance, develop groundbreaking research content, and collaborate with international scientists, while promoting the use of English to facilitate global integration.
