On the weekend of September 28 and 29, 4,337 students from Hanoi University of Science and Technology celebrated their graduation amidst a vibrant atmosphere and heartfelt congratulations from professors, families, and friends. The 64-65 Cohorts, who studied through the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, shared a deep sense of pride in their achievements and gratitude toward their mentors and loved ones.
4 Unique Aspects of Cohorts 64-65
“Given the countless challenges you have overcome, you are undoubtedly the best group of ‘survivors’ I have ever witnessed!” said Assoc. Prof. Tran Ngoc Khiem, Vice President of HUST, to new graduates of Cohort 64-65.
Recognized as one of the most exceptional cohorts, these students, especially the Cohort 65 freshmen, had to swiftly adapt to social distancing and online learning from home as they embarked on their university journey during COVID-19.
As they approached graduation, they faced yet another challenge when Typhoon Yagi, the most destructive storm to hit Northern Vietnam in 30 years, struck the region, impacting both the students and their families.
For the Cohort 64, this marked the last group to graduate with a bachelor's of engineering degree. Starting with Cohort 65, all universities in Vietnam, including HUST, began implementing the new Education Law, which permits only bachelor's programs.
This graduation ceremony featured the largest number of graduates to date, with both Cohorts 64 and 65 celebrating together. It also included the highest number of international graduates, with 19 students from 3 different countries.
Be the best version of yourself!
After graduation, each new graduate from HUST chose their own path for the future: pursuing higher education to become scientists, joining companies to work as experts and managers, or starting their own ventures.
“Regardless of the path you choose, I want you to be the best version of yourselves, showcasing the exceptional qualities that define a HUST graduate,” emphasized Assoc. Prof. Tran Ngoc Khiem.
In addition to upholding the values of HUST graduates, students have a duty to inspire and guide future cohorts toward greater horizons. In this era of global integration, they must be ready to compete on equal footing with graduates from top universities worldwide. All HUSTers, their families, friends, and society believe that the new graduates can help Vietnam stand alongside global powers.
Valedictorian of SOICT, HUST: “Thank you for choosing HUST, for choosing to face challenges head-on!”
Representing the new graduates, Nguyen The An, Valedictorian of SOICT, expressed gratitude to his mentors, families and friends, and especially himself for choosing to study at HUST.
“I still remember four years ago as a freshman attending an orientation with the slogan, ‘Enter HUST to tackle challenges.’ At the time, it felt like a warning about how challenging the studies here would be. Now, I realize the education the University provides is actually a springboard, enabling us to contribute to the nation and innovate technologies that prove that Vietnamese talent is on par with the world,” shared An.
According to An, after the ceremony, the new graduates have entered adulthood, leaving behind exams and assignments. He encouraged them to apply the knowledge and experience gained at HUST to impactful projects and work that benefit many people.
Listening to their fellow student's speech, Vo Hoai Nam (Ha Tinh) and Hoang Tran Xuan Son (Nghe An) from SOICT reminisced about their time at HUST and the professors who shaped their journey - Dr. Le Quang Thuy, Assoc. Prof. Ta Hai Tung, Dr. Bui Quoc Trung and Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Trang. Both Son and Nam are now working at the companies where they interned.
“HUST students are highly trusted by companies. Before our internships even ended, they had already hinted at offering us full-time positions,” the two K65 graduates said with a smile.
Bui Thuy Trang (Hai Duong) and Nguyen Thi Hien (Phu Tho), both from SEM, reminisced about their favorite professors. Trang spoke about how Dr. Tran Thi Huong inspired her studies, while Hien expressed gratitude for Dr. Nguyen Thi Vu Khuyen's dedicated guidance in helping her complete her thesis.
Now employed at a South Korean company, Hien shared, “The high expectations from businesses can be stressful, but I always remind myself to keep pushing, just like the HUST alumni before me, and to be the best version of myself.”
“We trust HUST with our children!”
With weathered faces and sun-kissed skin, Tran Nhu Lap and Do Thi Hue woke up early, dressed in their best clothes, and traveled from Gia Thang, Gia Vien, Ninh Binh to HUST with their eldest son, Tran Nhu Vinh - a HUST Cohort 58 alumnus in Automotive Engineering - to celebrate their second son, Tran Nhu Hao's graduation.
After graduating, Vinh quickly secured a job in his hometown, got married, and was expecting his third child. Content with his life, he felt grateful for easing his parents’ burdens and supporting his brother. “I hope my brother’s path is smoother than mine. He’s luckier than I was - our parents couldn’t even make it to my ceremony!” Vinh said.
“We’re farmers, but we supported our sons’ love of learning and trusted HUST with their education,” Mrs. Hue shared. “Our eldest found a job right after graduation and helped his brother through school. They’ve grown up well, and we’re so proud.”
Pride gleamed in their eyes as they told their grandchildren, “One day, you’ll study at HUST too, just like your dad and uncle.”
Nguyen Ngoc Oanh and Nguyen Thi Hang, the parents of SOICT graduate Nguyen Ngoc Quynh Anh (Hung Yen), proudly shared: “Our daughter has excelled academically and gained admission to HUST with top scores. Now, she plans to study abroad for two years to enhance her opportunities with global corporations. Given her passion for learning, we’re more than happy to support her.”
Mrs. Hằng recalled her daughter’s time at HUST, sharing joyful stories about Quynh Anh’s classes and friends. “I have entrusted my daughter to HUST for several years!” she fondly said.
Despite his old age and the long journey, Mr. Nguyen Van Luu, Quynh Anh’s grandfather, insisted on attending his beloved granddaughter’s graduation ceremony. For every grandchild who excels and graduates, he rewards them with 5 million VND. “Since Quynh Anh graduated with honors, I’m giving her 10 million VND,” he proudly shared.
The pride and confidence of her grandparents, parents, teachers, and friends serve as a significant source of motivation for the new graduates of HUST as they embark on their upcoming journeys.
