To mark the 78th anniversary of Vietnam’s War Invalids and Martyrs Day (July 27, 1947 – July 27, 2025), on the morning of July 23, Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST) organized a “Visiting and Presenting Gifts of Gratitude” program for wounded and sick veterans receiving treatment at Thuan Thanh Nursing Center in Bac Ninh province.

Leading the delegation was Assoc. Prof. Huynh Quyet Thang – President of HUST, accompanied by leaders from the University Office, the Veterans Association, the Youth Union, and the Student Association. The trip was not only a humanitarian activity but also a profound expression of the Vietnamese tradition of “When you eat a fruit, think of the man who planted the tree” and HUST’s spirit of “Responsibility to the Nation, Commitment to the Community.”

Honoring and Caring for National Heroes

Thuan Thanh Nursing Center, under the Ministry of Home Affairs, is one of the main facilities in Vietnam providing care for severely wounded and sick veterans. It hosts the largest number of severely injured veterans nationwide.

Over its 60-year history, the Center has received, managed, and provided medical care and rehabilitation for more than 1,000 severely wounded and sick veterans – many of whom sustained injuries on battlefields during Vietnam’s wars for independence, reunification, and national defense, as well as international missions.

Today, the Center is home to 84 severely wounded and sick veterans (classified at 1/4 disability level), including five women. Among them was the late Nguyen Van Hinh, a former HUST student (Cohort 6), who left his studies to join the resistance against the US and was gravely injured in combat.

The HUST delegation began their visit with a solemn incense offering at the Center’s Memorial House for Fallen Heroes, paying tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for the nation’s independence and freedom.

Welcoming the delegation, Deputy Director of the Center, Truong Dang Binh, shared that most veterans here suffer from severe spinal injuries and are wheelchair-bound for life. Despite their conditions, they remain optimistic and active—repairing household appliances, writing articles, composing poetry—not only to support themselves but also to inspire younger generations.

He expressed heartfelt appreciation for HUST’s care and attention, noting that such gestures are a great source of encouragement, helping the veterans continue to live with purpose and dignity.

Upholding Responsibility to the Nation

In his remarks, Assoc. Prof. Huynh Quyet Thang expressed deep gratitude to past generations, families of martyrs, and all those who served and sacrificed for the nation: “Our independence, peace, and prosperity today were built on the sweat, blood, and ultimate sacrifices of millions of compatriots. We owe a debt of gratitude to the wounded and sick veterans, who are living embodiments of courage and resilience.”

He also recalled that during wartime, thousands of HUST faculty, staff, and students set aside their studies to join the army. Many never returned, while hundreds became wounded or sick veterans—including alumnus Nguyen Van Hinh—who were later cared for at the Center with compassion and dedication.

A Heartfelt Connection

During the visit, the HUST delegation presented meaningful gifts to the veterans and performed two musical tributes, stirring memories of bravery and sacrifice while inspiring pride and a sense of duty among the younger generation.

On behalf of the Center’s leadership and the veterans, Deputy Director Truong Dang Binh thanked HUST for its years of steadfast friendship and heartfelt concern.

Veteran representative Le Van Quy also shared his appreciation: “Thank you, HUST, for bringing not only meaningful gifts but also warm affection and sincere concern. This is a great source of encouragement that helps us overcome pain, continue living useful lives, and uphold the tradition of Uncle Ho’s soldiers.”

The trip ended, but it left a deep impression on every member of the delegation. For HUST, this was more than an act of gratitude—it was a reaffirmation of the university’s enduring values and its commitment to carrying forward the “Responsibility to the Nation, Commitment to the Community” spirit across generations.
